Vizhinjam Port, India’s first semi-automated and all-weather transshipment seaport, was inaugurated on May 2, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kerala. Strategically positioned just 10 nautical miles from the international shipping route, Vizhinjam aims to transform India’s maritime logistics and reduce reliance on foreign ports. The project also marks a significant milestone for Kerala, placing it firmly on the global maritime map.
Vizhinjam Port: India’s First Semi-Automated Transshipment Hub
The port is designed to handle large container vessels with minimal turnaround time, enhancing India’s capacity for global trade. It is equipped with advanced container handling technology, modern navigation systems, and deep draft capabilities.
Key Features:
- First semi-automated port in India
- Positioned near the east-west international shipping corridor
- Capable of handling ultra large container ships
- Operational efficiency to rival global ports like Colombo, Dubai, and Singapore

PM Modi Dedicates Vizhinjam to the Nation
At approximately 10:30 a.m., Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Vizhinjam Port, accompanied by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and members of the state Cabinet. The Prime Minister boarded the MSC Celestinomaresca, a vessel docked at the newly constructed facility, and later inspected the Port Operations Building. He then formally dedicated the Vizhinjam International Seaport to the nation, marking a historic moment in India’s maritime history.
“Vizhinjam marks a new chapter in India’s maritime journey. It will boost trade, create employment, and connect Kerala to the world,” PM Modi stated during the inauguration.
Political Tussle Over Port Credit
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the port’s inauguration reignited a political tug-of-war. Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan opted out of the ceremony and instead posted a video on social media highlighting the pivotal role played by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in conceptualizing the port back in 2015.
This incident reflects the ongoing contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress over credit for major infrastructure achievements in Kerala.

Adani Group’s Role in Execution
A.S. Suresh Babu, former Managing Director of Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. (VISL), praised the Adani Group for successfully navigating the logistical and operational challenges of the project. According to Babu, the group’s in-depth understanding of Kerala’s on-ground realities and their port-building expertise were instrumental in delivering the project to completion.
“Only Adani could have completed Vizhinjam. Their understanding of Kerala’s conditions and port-building expertise was key,” Babu said in an interview.
Strategic Location: Gateway to Global Trade
One of Vizhinjam Port’s biggest advantages is its proximity—just 10 nautical miles—to the key international maritime route connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and East Asia. This strategic location is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependency on foreign ports such as Colombo and Singapore for transshipment services.
The port aims to attract global shipping liners and catalyze the growth of Kerala’s industrial base, supported by upcoming infrastructure like outer ring roads, national highway linkages, and dedicated freight corridors.

Employment and Economic Potential
Vizhinjam Port is poised to become a major driver of economic activity in southern India. It is projected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs in port operations, logistics, and supporting industries. The port is also expected to trigger a regional development boom in and around Thiruvananthapuram.
Additionally, by boosting exports and improving India’s maritime logistics, the port will enhance the country’s standing as a key player in South Asia’s maritime trade. Complementary infrastructure projects, including road and rail connectivity, are in advanced planning stages to support this transformation.
